Oops! I thought these were shells from different kinds of nuts. I guess that shows what kind of nut am I? :-) So these clay lamps are to be lit in the temple like candles in a Roman church?
Ok I posted the last comment. I have found out a Temple where they sell these clay lamps. They gave information that these lamps come from Calcutta and it goes to Temples all over Tamil Nadu. I have seen a large collection of these in Temples in Kumbakonam. I missed to buy them there.
In Chennai I have bought them recently around Maha Prathyankara Devi Temple in Sholinganallur, Chennai.
