Vellore Fort

Temple in the Vellore Fort
Vellore is a town about 150 km from Chennai and the town surrounds a fort. Vellore Fort was built in the 16th century under the Vijayanagara Empire. Vellore has a long history of war and the fort was under different occupations. The last time was under British rule. Vellore Fort also witnessed the First Indian revolution against British rule, called the Sepoy Mutiny by the invading foreigners.

  1. Very interesting. I remember the name Sepoy Mutiny from some reading of years back, but I wouldn't have remembered what it was!

  2. Nice photos, though I wouldn't consider Vellore at 150 km is 'near' Chennai.
@Lowell : This post also give an unclear idea of Sepoy Mutiny.

Sepoy Mutiny actually refers to the rebellion by Indian soldiers in Central India (mainly the Central Gangetic Plain) between 10 May 1857 and 20 Jun 1858, (more than an year).

The Mutiny at Vellore Fort, commonly referred to as 'Vellore Mutiny' was almost 50 years earlier, and happened on 10 Jul 1806 - it lasted for one single day.

I also doubt whether the British at that time can be called 'invading' foreigners - as there was significant British presence in India from 1612.

The Madras Presidency, the 1st Presidency of its kind, was established in 1640 - 166 years before Vellore Mutiny. Vellore Fort itself was under British control from 1760 - 46 years before the mutiny.
