A monument dedicated to the poet and verses of ancient poet Thiruvalluvar in the heart of Chennai was constructed in the mid 1970s at the deepest point of what had once been a lake. More than 1300 verses from the poet's most famous work, the Thirukurral, are inscribed in a hall section of the monument that leads up to the replica of the temple chariot in Thiruvarur. The hall with inscriptions is able to hold 4000 people.
